A little love story on a cozy cottage 

 

Lia woke up slowly, eyes heavy with sleep and body sore from working all day on the little garden the day prior. The first thing she did was look around her, the room illuminated by the cool sun that entered through the huge window, one of the reasons they decided on that house. At her side, softly snoring and looking more comfortable than ever laid her girlfriend, Malen, her pink hair locks sprawled across her face hiding it, her mouth slightly parted. The girl smiled to herself at the picture in front of her wondering after a long sigh how she could be so lucky. They had met through social media a few years back. Shared interests and long chats until ungodly hours led to a nervous first meeting followed by many many others. Shy smiles, quick glances, and soft touches derived from cuddly movie nights and their first kiss which was awkward, intense, and wonderful, all at the same time. After that, other sleepovers followed filled with more smiles, not so shy this time, stolen kisses, and shared laughs. 

It had already been four years since then and they were now living together in a little cottage just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland, they had two cats and a dog and a little garden with some vegetables and a lot of flowers where they liked to have picnics on the few sunny days they had. One was a teacher for kindergarten kids at a nearby school, the other was a full-time translator working mostly from home and they had a quiet and peaceful life. 

Stretching on her spot in the bed to get rid of any sleep she had lingering she got up after leaving a kiss on her messy girl’s head. Once she was out of bed she had their two cats, Moony and Star, on her feet meowing softly to get her attention. 

“Yes, I know you’re hungry little guys. I’m on it.” She said covering her mouth when a yawn overtook her making her way towards the kitchen. She looked outside the kitchen’s window now that her brain was awake enough to process and saw that it was one of those rare days where the sun was shining brightly in a sky completely free from any clouds, the flowers in the garden were on full bloom waving softly with the wind. She heard some trotting and turned around just in time to see their dog, Sunny, reach her and jump excitedly asking for her morning walk. After leaving the two cats with their bowls full of food and water she grabbed her jacket, it was still early spring after all, and the pink leash and attached it to Sunny’s collar so they could go outside. 

By the time she came back from the little walk her girlfriend had already woken up and was preparing coffee and tea, coffee for Malen and tea for her. Malen’s eyes laid unfocused on a piece of furniture in the kitchen, her mind far away as always when she was still fighting back to sleep. She took the opportunity to get behind her and hug her by the middle leaving a kiss on a sensitive spot on her neck. 

“Slept well, my love?” Asked Lia, voice sweet, barely above a whisper. 

“I always sleep well when you’re around to cuddle me” Was the answer provided, a soft smile appearing on Malen’s lips while she turned off the stove, both the tea and coffee ready. 

“Do you fancy a couple of toasts for breakfast?” Asked Lia to let her girlfriend go after pecking her lips like a good morning greeting to take out the pre-sliced bread. 

“Yeah, thanks, darling.”

They decided to set the table in their little garden since the day was perfect for it and eat mostly in silence, simply enjoying each other’s company and the sound of the birds chirping happily around them. Lia wondered again how she got so lucky. She was living in her dream country, her dream city, her dream house, with her dream pets and sharing it all with her dream person, the most wonderful girl to ever exist. 

As the day went on and they got on their house chores, doing laundry, cleaning the house, etc. Lia grew more and more aware of the fact that she never wanted anything to change. Well, except maybe her hair color, once a rich red was now faded into a weird mix of orange and yellow, not very fitting, she would have to go to the supermarket and get new hair dye soon, she thought as she looked on a little mirror placed on the wall of one of their house corridors. 

Sunny was playing at catching butterflies in the garden while Moony and Star, never apart from each other, slept on the grass, enjoying the sun's rays. It was such a peaceful day it was almost unbelievable, and it made her wish for more of them like this. She and Malen had settled in the garden with one of their big picnic towels with cool drinks and a book for each of them. Reading on days like this is always one of their favorite past times. 

When the sun started to go down and the cold became to make itself more present, they decided that it was time for them to go back inside, so they gathered their things and entered the house. 

“Would you like to maybe watch a movie before going to sleep?”  Said Malen looking at Lia with a cute smile and patting the sofa on the empty spot beside where she was seated. Lia left the picnic towel on one of the kitchen chairs and the books on the kitchen aisle before approaching the spot where Malen was and seating beside her, an arm around her waist to pull her closer. 

“What kind of movie are you in the mood for?” She asked, finally setting Malen fully on her lap watching as she grabbed the TV remote to turn on the TV and put on Netflix. After a quick scroll through the titles, she settled for a romantic comedy and cuddled closer to her girlfriend, her head resting on her partner's chest while Lia got her arms around her to hold her more firmly. She honestly wasn’t paying real attention to the movie, one of her hands had moved to pet Lia’s hair, softly untangling the few knots formed on her soft hair after a day of doing house chores. She realized soon after that her girlfriend was fast asleep on top of her, so she decided to get up, careful to not wake her up, and move to their bedroom after turning off the TV. 

“Uhmm… Did the movie end already?” Asked Malen as she noticed the mattress under her. 

“No, my love, but you’re tired and tomorrow we both have an early day,” said Lia softly, leaving a kiss on her forehead and undressing her to quickly put her pajamas on, noticing that she was fast asleep again. After tucking her in Lia proceeded to go wash and put on her pajamas. She got into bed and pulled her girlfriend closer, big spooning her and getting both of them comfortable. Moony and Star were curled into one another on a corner of the bed and Sunny has curled within herself on her bed a few meters away. Just as she felt herself fall into Morpheus's arms; she thanked the universe once more for letting her live this perfect, wonderful life.
